Prime Minister Mark Carney

April 16, 2026 –  As of April 14, PM Carney has a total of 174  votes  after five floor crossings (four Conservatives and one from NDP) plus three Liberal MP candidates winning at the April 13 byelections; (in  Ontario, two  and in Quebec, one). PM Carney is now moving full speed ahead with serious and ambitious new plans to build Canada strong starting with the number one concern of all Canadians: affordability.

At its April 9 - 11 Liberal National Convention in Montreal over 4,500 Canadians met in-person to work together in building a stronger Canada for everyone. Already the Liberal government has cut taxes for the middle class, ensuring 22 million Canadians take home more of every pay cheque.

On April 14, it announced a temporary suspension from April 20 to Labor day (about 4 months) of the federal fuel excise tax to reduce the cost of diesel, gasoline and aviation fuel for everyone.

It has eliminated federal internal trade barriers, passed their 2025 budget with generational investments to build Canada’s economy strong, and secured more than 20 new economic and security partnerships to create more opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses.

Just last month, it announced that Canada achieved the NATO 2% defense spending target – ensuring that Canadian leadership will be defined not just by the strength of  its values, but also by the value of its strength.

To defend Canadian sovereignty, it’s rebuilding and reinvesting in the Canadian Armed Forces, and launched its Defense Industrial Strategy to strengthen supply chain and create high paying careers in Canada.

It stressed that the foundation of Canadian sovereignty, independence, and strength lies in what Canadians build at home, together.

It passed the One Canadian Economy Act to build economy, fast-track major projects, bring down costs, and create more opportunities in every region of the country.

By making the National School Food Program permanent and introducing the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, it is  protecting and strengthening the programs that Canadians rely on.

In just one year in office, the Liberals have already made great progress and they were just getting started. Now with a majority government, they will redouble their efforts to fight, to protect, and to build for all Canadians as it starts its second year in office.

According to the latest IMF report, Canada is now the second strongest economy in the G7.
