August 1, 2024 – Happening now until August 5 at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre in downtown Vancouver, BC is Pagtitipon 2024, an exhibit featuring original artworks in a variety of mediums of a select group of 14 Canadian Filipino artists.
This year’s Pagtitipon, which means “a gathering,” features artists Danvic Briones, Paulina Constancia, Tessie Dichupa, Karl Hipol, Kiana Hipolito, Delia Laglagaron, Edgardo S. Lantin, Lenore RS Lim, Chito Maravilla, Esmie McLaren, JA Tan, Broderick Wong and Avie Felix. Felix is the show’s curator and comes from the Philippines for this special exhibit. The event also launches the first ever anthology of Canadian Filipino artists, Reconfigured Space, edited by Canadian poet Lakshmi Gill who was born in the Philippines.
An artists’ talk is also scheduled for August 3 at the Roundhouse’ exhibition hall from 2pm with Felix, Briones, Esmie McLaren, Hipol, Tan and Hipolito.
McLaren told Canadian Filipino Net (CFNet) that although the artists were given free reign as to the subject of their artworks, she feels that “memories of the Philippines and appreciation of current Canadian surroundings emerged as common threads in the paintings, naturally celebrating the (Philippine-Canadian diplomatic relations’) 75th anniversary.”
McLaren co-chairs this year’s exhibit with Lenore RS Lim, founder of the Filipino Music and Art Foundation in BC (FMAAF).
The FMAAF collaborated with the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre with the help of the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver and Global Pinoy Diaspora Canada
The Filipino Music and Art Foundation in BC is committed to promoting appreciation and understanding of fine arts within the community at large, as well as enhancing the public exposure of the Filipino artists it supports.
