The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa’s Sentro Rizal is featuring an exhibit on Philippine mythical creatures by children’s book illustrator Frances Alcaraz.

Dubbed Alamat - An Art Exhibit of Philippine Mythical Creatures, it kicks off the month of August as the Philippines celebrates Linggo ng Wika (English translation: Language Week). The exhibit runs from August 1 to 7 at the Sentro Rizal Ottawa on 30 Murray Street.

Alamat, a Tagalog word meaning ‘legend’, is an important part of Filipino literature and culture. Alcaraz depicts creatures of Philippine legends in modern, non-traditional illustrations that continue to keep Filipino culture and tradition alive.

Alcaraz is an established illustrator with over 25 children’s books published in the Philippines, Japan, Brazil, Singapore and New York and in different languages. Her illustrations for the story The Little Mermaid was included in the Graphic Canon of Children’s Literature published by Seven Stories Press in New York City. Three of her books have been turned into ballets, using her illustrations as bases for costumes and set designs.

Alcarazhas done solo exhibits as well as group exhibits around the world including New York, Bologna, Singapore, London, Bangkok, Tokyo, New Delhi and Athens. She has received awards for her works and was shortlisted in the 2017 NamiConcours for Picture Book Illustration in South Korea.

In a statement, Alcaraz notes, “I love to work on stories that capture my imagination and make me laugh. One of the thingsI love about my job is that I can help bring stories to life.”
