October 1, 2026 — CanadianFilipino.Net recognizes the Filipino Canadian Community & Cultural Society of British Columbia (Filipino BC) for obtaining CRA charitable status, a significant milestone.

The September 23, 2026 letter from the Canada Revenue Agency reads: “We are pleased to inform you that Filipino Canadian Community & Cultural Society of British Columbia meets the requirements for tax-exempt status as a registered charity under the Income Tax Act.” “Registered status,” the CRA letter further notes, “comes with both privileges and obligations.”

The core legal privilege for Filipino BC is the authority to issue official donation receipts for income tax purposes. These receipts enable individual donors to claim a non-refundable charitable tax credit, reducing their personal income tax, while corporate donors can claim a direct tax deduction against their revenue. This provides a strong incentive for corporations to sponsor Filipino BC’s charitable events.

Charitable status is expected to expand Filipino BC’s fundraising opportunities by attracting new donors and sponsors through tax receipts. It may also provide access to grant funding previously unavailable to unregistered organizations and support stronger programs for the Filipino Canadian community. Additionally, Filipino BC may form partnerships with other nonprofits or government agencies, further increasing its impact.

To maintain this status, Filipino BC must dedicate all resources, including funds, property, and personnel, exclusively to its approved charitable purposes, such as poverty relief, education, or other legally recognized charitable activities. Funds cannot benefit directors or members. The organization must comply with strict rules for issuing tax receipts, maintain accurate financial records, and file a Registered Charity Information Return (Form T3010) annually. The CRA publishes this filing on its public Charities Listing database for transparency and audit purposes.

Filipino BC can take pride in this achievement, and the Canadian Filipino community in BC and across Canada can share in this recognition. Filipino BC is now a CRA-registered charity and a federally recognized institution.
