Pinoys on Parliament 2021 (PoP21) holds its third annual national youth leadership conference via a free online event from February 19 to 21. The theme for this year’s conference is Bayanihan, a spirit of communal unity and collaboration, with workshops and panel discussions on leadership in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and Filipino Canadian identity in arts, culture and politics.
PoP21 begins on February 19 at 6 p.m. ET with a keynote address from Ambassador Petronila Garcia, former Philippine ambassador to Canada and currently service as consul general in New York, USA.
On February 20, panel discussions under the theme “Pinoys in Parliament” begin at 12 noon ET and will be led by leaders in government service: Vancouver-Kensington MLA Mable Elmore, Whitehorse City councilor Jocelyn Curteanu, York Eglinton Business Improvement Area manager Louroz Mercader and A.I.M. Creative founder Jane Spitz. These will be followed by workshops from 3:00 pm onwards.
Panel discussions on February 21 with the themes “Filipino-Canadian Leaders in STEM” and “Bayanihan at Work” will both start at 12 noon ET.
Panelists for “Filipino-Canadian Leaders in STEM” include Dr. Mayrose Salvador of Pueblo Science, Mississauga, Ontario family doctor Dr. Ryan Figueroa, National Research Council of Canada’s Dr. Phil De Luna and University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs’ Dr. M. Cynthia Goh.
“Bayanihan at Work” panelists include York University Centre for Asian Research’s Chaya Ocampo Go, Toronto Dominion (TD) Bank’s Paul Jonathan Saguil, Ambassador Garcia and University of British Columbia’s Dr. Leonora Angeles who’s also a Canadian Filipino Net contributor.
The February 21 panel discussions will also be followed by a series of workshops from 3:00 pm onwards.
Workshop topics during the conference include “No mom, design is a science too: using design for problem solving”, “Indigenous reconciliation for Filipino-Canadians: what does that look like?”, “The language baggage: unpacking language ideologies among young Filipino-Canadians” and “Taking the leap: Filipino-Canadian leadership in politics and community” among others.
