January 1, 2025 — Statistics Canada says that entry wage is a sound indicator of the economic future of new immigrants in the country.

Going by this marker, Filipino immigrants in Canada are doing relatively well.

A December 9, 2024 report by Statistics Canada about the growth of median entry wage shows that new arrivals from the Philippines enjoy decent salaries.

Overall, the median annual entry wage for all new immigrants, including those from the Philippines, one year after admission to Canada rose from $40,200 in 2021 to $42,900 in 2022.

This means that from 2021 to 2022, there was a year-over-year increase of 6.7 percent.

Statistics Canada noted that the increase in median entry wage was on par with the average yearly increase observed from 2013 to 2022 of 6.6 percent.

In its report, the agency also noted that while entry wage is a good indicator of the economic outcomes of new immigrants, it is “important to also consider how their wages evolve over longer periods of time”.

Statistics Canada related that immigrants admitted in 2012 saw their median wage grow from $25,900 in 2013 to $45,100 in 2022, which represents a 74.1 percent increase.

It also noted that wages varied among certain immigrants admitted to Canada in 2012.

Statistics Canada reported that in 2013, the median wage of immigrants admitted a year prior from the Philippines was $31,800.

In comparison, those from India had an annual median wage of $25,300; Pakistan, $19,800; China $16,690; and Iran, $15,600.

Ten years later, in 2022, the median wage of immigrants from the Philippines who arrived in 2012 grew 47 percent to $46,800.

To compare, immigrants from India saw their median wage increase to $44,900; Pakistan, $32,100; China, $35,900; and Iran, $49,400.

“The rapid growth in the wages of immigrants from Iran can in part be linked to the finding that they were often admitted in categories that have an above-average growth in wages over time, namely the skilled worker and skilled trades and government-assisted refugee categories,” Statistics Canada explained.

A separate Statistics Canada report released on December 6, 2024 shows that Filipinos posted the top employment rate among the visible minority population aged 15 years old and above.

In November 2024, 73.6 percent of Filipinos in Canada aged 15 years old and up are working.

This proportion surpasses the overall employment rate of visible minorities at 64.9 percent as well as the employment rate of the total Canadian population at 60.8 percent.

Previous Statistics Canada reports have also shown that Filipinos are a hardworking people.

The agency noted that Filipinos had the highest employment rate of 74.2 percent in 2023. The national average in 2023 was 62 percent.

The employment rate for Filipinos in Canada was also the highest in the country in 2022 at 75.3 percent.
