The Filipino community was shocked on November 6 to hear about the passing in Toronto of Paulina Corpuz,

the initiator of June as Filipino Heritage Month in Canada.  She worked hard to make Filipinos visible in Canada through the arts and culture. She considered invisibility as the community’s biggest challenge.

“We are one of the largest immigrant groups yet we are not visible in the important places such as the three levels of government – we do not see our faces around the governing table,” was her lament. She urged Canadian Filipinos “to raise their voices and step up to promote our community’s agenda.”

She came to Canada in 1993 and became very much involved in the Filipino community. She was an organizer of the Filipino Workers Network and recognized as Pinoy of the Year by the Golden Balangay in 2018 and honored by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Toronto for her 30 years of community service.
