October 1, 2023 - Canadian Filipinx Louie Leyson of Surrey, B.C. won this year’s CBC Nonfiction Prize for their essay inspired by research on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). [Leyson uses the pronouns ‘they’ and ‘them’.]

October 1, 2023 - Pepe, a play based on the Philippines’ national hero Jose Rizal, is currently onstage in Victoria. Co-produced by Theatre Inconnu and Bayanihan Community Centre, the play was written by Malou Jacob, Southeast Asian Write Award recipient and resident playwright of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). 

September 16, 2023 - A film produced by Filipino producer Enrique Miguel Baniqued had been chosen as one of only two recipients of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) Every Story Accelerator programme. The film Village Keeper is directed by TIFF alumna Karen Chapman and is based on Chapman’s award-winning short film Measure.

September 1, 2023 - After more than a decade, acclaimed filmmaker Jun Robles Lana hits the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) again with the world premiere of his film Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (Your Mother’s Son). In 2012, Lana joined the film festival with his award-winning Bwakaw starring the late veteran actor Eddie Garcia.

June 16, 2023 - Another Dimasalang III artist who honed his craft by attending private art lessons from SYM Mendoza, the well-known maestro of Filipino artists in the Philippines and in Canada, is Edgardo Lantin who has made his mark in the world of international artists.  He was one of the featured artists in the October / November 2003 issue of the prestigious International Artist Magazine.

June 1, 2023 - In celebration of the first Lapulapu Day, wooden swords painted silver clacked and flew on April 29, at the Bayanihan Centre of the Victoria Filipino Canadian Association (VFCA) in Victoria, BC. Actors Arnel Bongcasan and Sean Benedict Penola leaped through the air, enacting through dance the fierce battle between Filipino hero Lapulapu and the conquistador, Ferdinand Magellan.
